The electronic music industry operates very differently from traditional music, which creates friction when applying to Arts Council England (ACE). ACE assessors are used to reviewing classical symphony programs or traditional record deals. When a DJ submits a mix from SoundCloud or a flyer from a local underground club, ACE often struggles to verify its legitimacy. We help producers and DJs translate their underground or festival success into the formal language the Home Office understands.
Myth #1: "My tracks have millions of plays on SoundCloud and Spotify"
While streaming numbers prove your music is popular, ACE requires proof of industry curation and critical acclaim. Self-releasing music on SoundCloud or Spotify without label backing is considered "self-publishing," which ACE explicitly discounts.
You must show that your music was released by recognized electronic music labels (e.g., Defected, Spinnin', Anjunabeats, Ninja Tune), or that it has been heavily supported/played in live sets by A-list international DJs (like Carl Cox, Tiësto, or Peggy Gou). You need the DJ tracklists as proof.
Myth #2: "Playing clubs every weekend proves I am exceptional"
Playing local or regional clubs as a resident DJ is considered standard commercial work. To win the visa, you must prove international demand. Are you being booked for international tours? Do you have a residency at a globally recognized superclub (e.g., in Ibiza, Berlin, or Miami)? Have you played the main stage or a curated tent at a major international festival?
