The Global Talent visa is not a one-time grant. It runs for a set period, usually three or five years depending on the route you entered on. If you entered as an emerging leader, your first grant is shorter and you will almost certainly need a renewal before you qualify for settlement. Even some leaders need to extend to reach five years of continuous residence. Renewal is not a second endorsement, but it is a serious application, and the timeline around it decides whether your settlement clock stays intact.
When does a Global Talent visa expire?
The expiry date is printed on your Biometric Residence Permit or recorded in your digital status. Standard grants run for three years for emerging leaders and five years for leaders, but always confirm the date on your own documents rather than assuming.
Your leave expires at midnight on that date. Working past it without a valid visa creates a gap that can damage your settlement clock and your employment record. Put the date in your calendar months in advance, and set a second reminder six months before expiry, because preparation time disappears faster than you expect.
When should you apply for renewal?
Apply before your current visa expires, and apply as early as the rules allow. The Home Office sets a window before expiry during which applications can be made from inside the UK. Applying inside that window means you can stay lawfully while the renewal is decided, and your residence continuity is preserved.
If you apply late, you may be treated as an overstayer and face a far more difficult process, including the possibility of applying from abroad. The simple rule is to start preparing about six months before your expiry and to submit well inside the window. A renewal application is not something to leave for the final month.
What evidence does renewal require?
Renewal is lighter than the original application. You do not re-run the full endorsement process in most cases, and you do not need to rebuild the evidence file that won your endorsement. What you still have to prove is identity, presence in the UK, and that you continue to meet the conditions of your route.
The Home Office looks for continuous residence and evidence that you have been working or otherwise active in your endorsed field. Collect payslips, contracts, bank statements, and any records that show your professional activity in the UK since your grant. The file should tell a simple story: you arrived, you worked, and you are still here.
Do you need a new endorsement?
In most cases, no. The endorsement that won your original visa continues to support your extension, provided you are still working in your endorsed field. That is one of the practical advantages of the route: renewal does not ask you to prove your talent all over again.
The exception is when your circumstances have fundamentally changed, for example if you moved to a completely different sector or let your activity lapse. If that happens, a fresh endorsement may be needed before renewal is possible. If you are unsure whether your current activity still matches your endorsement, check the conditions attached to your original grant before you apply.
What if you renew after your visa has expired?
A late application is the situation to avoid. If your visa has already expired, you cannot use the normal in-country renewal route in most cases, and you may be required to leave and apply from abroad. That resets your plans and interrupts your residence count, which pushes your settlement date backwards.
Some overstayers can still apply from inside the UK, but the rules are narrower and the outcome is less certain. If you realise your visa has lapsed, get advice from a qualified immigration professional before taking any action. Do not simply keep working and hope the problem disappears, because the gap will be visible at settlement.
