Screenwriters: Navigating PACT Endorsement

Why brilliant, unproduced scripts get rejected, and how to prove international success in Film & TV.

For Screenwriters and Showrunners, the Global Talent Visa (assessed by PACT) is notoriously difficult. PACT evaluates writers purely on the commercial and critical success of their produced work. Many talented writers approach us with incredible scripts that have won screenplay competitions, but they lack the production credits required for the UK visa. I help writers focus on the exact credits that PACT demands.

Myth #1: "My script won a major screenplay competition, so I am a talent"

Winning a screenplay competition (even the Nicholl Fellowship) is an incredible achievement, but PACT evaluates international distribution. If a script has not been turned into a film or TV show that was distributed globally, PACT usually disregards it.

To win endorsement, you must have "Sole or Lead Writer" credits on productions that have either won major international awards (like an Oscar or Emmy) or have achieved significant global commercial distribution (e.g., a Netflix Original Series).

Myth #2: "I can use my work as a Script Editor or Staff Writer"

PACT requires you to have had "significant and direct" creative input. Being a Staff Writer or a Script Editor is often viewed as a supporting role. You must have credits as the "Created By," "Written By," or "Screenplay By" on the main title card. If your role was collaborative, you need undeniable proof from the Showrunner that your specific contributions drove the show's success.

What actually works for Screenwriters

  • Major Awards: Winning or being nominated for a WGA (Writers Guild of America) Award, BAFTA, or Oscar for Best Screenplay.
  • International Box Office: Writing a feature film that had a wide theatrical release in multiple countries.
  • Global Streaming Hits: Being the Creator or Lead Writer of a series that charted globally on major SVOD platforms (Netflix, HBO, Apple TV).
