I have been working in immigration PR and consulting for several years, helping tech professionals build the evidence base for the UK Global Talent Visa. During this time, I have analyzed dozens of Product Manager cases. The final result always depends on Tech Nation and your lawyer. Our part is building the biography and "packaging" your product metrics so that your expertise becomes undeniable to the assessor.
I want to honestly break down why it is harder for Product Managers to get the talent visa compared to software engineers, and how to solve this problem.
Myth #1: "I manage a great product, therefore I am exceptional"
At the start, many believe that if they manage a fintech app with a million users, the visa is guaranteed. This is the most common mistake. Tech Nation does not give you a visa for doing your day-to-day job well. That is what the Skilled Worker Visa is for.
Tech Nation wants to see innovation and your personal contribution to scaling. If you just did your job (even excellently), the assessor will say: "This is commercial routine." You must show how your product decisions changed the market or set a new standard.
Myth #2: "I don't write code, so I don't qualify"
The other extreme. Many PMs with a business background fear applying. Yes, Tech Nation is about technology. But they perfectly understand the difference between a Technical Applicant and a Business Applicant.
For a Business Applicant, it is critical to prove Commercial Impact. If you don't write code, you must show how you monetized technology. How your Customer Discovery led to a pivot that saved the startup. How your product strategy allowed expansion into new international markets.
What actually works
The talent visa doesn't require you to be Steve Jobs. It requires proving you are a level above the average. Here are the three pillars of a successful PM case:
- Outside the Day Job: You should speak at Tier-1 product conferences, write articles for major tech publications (like TechCrunch or Medium's top publications), or mentor at recognized incubators.
- Hard Metrics: Forget abstract claims like "improved UX." Show cohort analysis, Retention growth, CAC reduction, Amplitude graphs. Data is the only language assessors speak fluently.
- Letters of Recommendation: Not from colleagues you drink coffee with, but from C-level executives of well-known companies who can attest to your leadership in the sector.
What this means in practice
If you have 3-5 years of experience managing digital products in-house, there is a high probability you have what it takes. But this evidence must be gathered methodically.
We do not take on cases if we see no objective achievements—it is a waste of your money and our time. But if you have the foundation, we can build the missing elements (speaking engagements, press, mentorship) over 3-6 months to make your application bulletproof.
If you want to analyze your product experience for visa eligibility, book an honest, free audit.
