Mobile Developers: Beating the Tech Nation Audit

Why having 10,000 App Store downloads isn't enough, and how iOS/Android engineers prove true Exceptional Talent.

Mobile development is a heavily scrutinized category for the Global Talent Visa. Because it is relatively easy for an individual to build and publish a simple app, Tech Nation is on high alert for "average" developers trying to game the system. I have helped many Senior iOS and Android engineers successfully navigate this by shifting their focus from "I built an app" to "I engineered a scalable mobile architecture."

Myth #1: "My indie app has 10,000 downloads, so I am a talent"

Unless your independent app is consistently featured by Apple, has hundreds of thousands of active users, and generates significant revenue, a small indie app is not enough to prove Exceptional Talent on its own. Tech Nation wants to see impact at scale.

You are much more likely to be endorsed based on your work as a Senior Mobile Engineer at a recognized tech company, where you led the migration from Objective-C to Swift, implemented complex CI/CD pipelines for mobile, or managed the architecture of an app used by millions daily.

Myth #2: "Freelancing for multiple clients shows I am in high demand"

Tech Nation strongly dislikes the outsourcing and freelance model. If you run a mobile development agency or work as a freelancer building apps for client businesses (e.g., a restaurant app, a local gym app), you are at a very high risk of rejection.

To win, you must show you are building proprietary product-led technology, or you must have an incredibly strong open-source presence (like creating widely used CocoaPods or Gradle plugins) that offsets your freelance status.

What actually works for Mobile Engineers

  • Complex Architecture: Evidence of leading the technical design of highly complex, scaled mobile apps (e.g., real-time fintech apps, heavy multimedia processing).
  • Open Source Ecosystem: Significant contributions to the iOS/Android developer ecosystem via GitHub libraries, heavily upvoted StackOverflow profiles, or SDK development.
  • Mentorship & Speaking: Speaking at events like NSSpain, droidcon, or organizing major local mobile developer meetups.

Let's assess if your mobile architecture meets the Tech Nation standard.
