Global Talent Visa for Art Educators and Teaching Artists
Teaching alone does not qualify. Your own practice does. Here is the honest route for educators who are also working artists.
This is one of the most common misunderstandings we correct: Arts Council England does not endorse teaching as such. A distinguished career at a school or university, however respected, is not by itself evidence for the Global Talent Visa. What the route assesses is your own creative practice as an artist. The good news is that many educators are also working artists who have simply not built the public record their practice deserves.
Separating the Educator From the Artist
The file must be built around your practice, not your pedagogy. For a painter who teaches, that means exhibitions, sales into collections, reviews and awards for the paintings, with teaching mentioned only as context. Educators often have unshown bodies of work; the repositioning path develops and exhibits that work to an endorsable level, typically over 12 to 24 months.
Where Teaching Does Help
Seniority in respected institutions, external examiner roles, and invitations to lead masterclasses can support a case as evidence of standing in the field — but only alongside a genuine record of your own exhibited or published creative work. They reinforce; they cannot carry.

I am a professor of art. Isn't that enough?
Not on its own. Academic seniority demonstrates standing as an educator, but the route assesses your practice as an artist: exhibitions, publications, performances, awards. A strong teaching career with an undeveloped exhibition record needs the practice built up before the case is viable.
Can my students' success count as my evidence?
No. The assessment is about your own creative achievement, not your students'. Mentoring notable artists may appear as context, but the file stands or falls on your personal record as a practitioner.
How long does it take to build the practice?
For an educator with existing unshown work, twelve to twenty-four months is realistic: editing the work into coherent bodies, securing exhibitions or publications, and accumulating reviews and recognition. The timeline is shorter where a real practice already exists but has stayed private.
